Turkish Cypriots, Greek Cypriots and all Cypriots pay heavy costs as a result of the dead lock of the Cyprus issue. Turkish Cypriots face the impositions of Ankara and Greek Cypriots face the impositions of Europe and Troika.
The dead- lock of the Cyprus issue is deepened with each day that passes without a solution.

The reluctant attitude of the newly elected President of the Cyprus Republic, Nikos Anastasiadis’s and the insincere approach of Ankara and the Turkish Cypriot side to a solution as well as the deep economic crisis in the Greek Cypriot side all prohibit the re initiation of comprehensive solution negotiations.

Turkish Cypriots, Greek Cypriots and all Cypriots pay heavy costs as a result of the dead lock of the Cyprus issue. Turkish Cypriots face the impositions of Ankara and Greek Cypriots face the impositions of Europe and Troika.

Turkish Cypriots, particularly the working class are driven to poverty and migration by the neo-liberal economic ruin packages of the AKP Government.

Along with their collaborators in our country the AKP Government is gradually transferring all assets that belong to the Turkish Cypriot society and their public institutions to Turkish capital under the name of privatization.

Parallel to this neo- liberal imposition, The AKP Government forces the implementation of an unprogressive reactionary Islamic life style in our country. The launch of Theology Faculties in Universities, the pilot launch of the Imam Hatip High School at the Haspolat Vocational High School which is planned to be opened in other high schools and the increase of Koran courses are just a examples of the steps taken to spread the unprogressive Islamic lifestyle. The United Cyprus Party is a party that respects freedom of religion and thought. What are witnessing in Cyprus is the imposition of a particular sect of a particular religion on young minds and the attempt to indoctrinate youth with doctrines and dogmas.

On the other hand, a systematic population transfer continues to the northern part of Cyprus from Turkey. The overall objective is to complete the full colonization process of the northern part of Cyprus.

The current projects to bring water and electricity from Turkey to the northern part of Cyprus using pipes and cables is just another colonial policy. These projects will lead to the integration of northern part of Cyprus to Turkey as well as maintain a full dependency. Thus the United Cyprus Party rejects both projects.

The United Cyprus Party believes that the way out of these terrible conditions that Turkish Cypriots adhere is the broad solidarity and cooperation of all of the labor, democracy and peace forces for an early solution to the Cyprus issue. The United Cyprus Party continues to struggle in this direction.

In this context, the United Cyprus Party considered the 7th of April Nicosia Turkish Municipal elections as occasion to maintain the union of labor, peace and democracy forces to produce a common candidate and common council candidate list. The United Cyprus Party visited trade unions, non- governmental organizations and political parties to negotiate this approach. All of the visited organizations except political parties supported having a common list and common candidate. However, political parties preferred to enter the elections individually.

The United Cyprus Party did not only propose this form of collaboration with labour unions, democracy and peace forces for the Nicosia Turkish Municipality elections but emphasized that this union would continue after the elections until an early federal solution for Cyprus was reached. Unfortunately these political parties succumbed to their political greed, rejected working together during the elections and therefore lead to the devastation of this opportunity for the union of labor, peace and democracy forces.

Due to these reasons, the United Cyprus Party did not attend the Nicosia Turkish Municipality elections. Other political parties, which rejected the union of labor, democracy and peace forces were not successful and the general participation of voters in the election decreased significantly. CTP’s candidate Kadri Fellahoğlu was elected with one fifth of the votes.

The fact that progressive forces acted in a litigious, dispersed and fragmented manner lead to the progressive part of society disregarding alternative progressive policies and voting for mainstream regressive parties.

The Nicosia Turkish Municipality elections is a perfect example of the importance of the solidarity and cooperation of progressive forces in the northern part of Cyprus which is under occupation.

The United Cyprus Party supports the solidarity of labor, democracy and peace forces against the extinction process of Turkish Cypriots and continues its struggle for an early federal solution.
